Orchard Cottage is a luxurious, high quality, open plan dome-shaped cottage. It is fully insulated, for cosy stays all year round. It is set in the grounds of Ballawyllin Farm within our orchard area. It has its own outside patio area, and shared access to an outdoor hot tub and sauna set in a separate patio area. The farm is set on a private road in a secluded valley, far from traffic and noise yet only 15 minutes drive from Douglas. We woke every morning to birdsong and views of partridges from the deck.
The little house felt huge! Everything we needed – perfect to bring back fresh local fare from the farmers market and cook. Evenings in the hot tub sealed the deal. We could have stayed happily in the house but had just as much fun exploring the wonderful island. Neil was easy to communicate with and a polite and helpful host.
We would recommend to anyone and come back in a heartbeat!! Newly converted barn furnished to a high standard. Centrally situated in Crosby with lovely walks and cycle trails nearby.

We just showed them what we do and how we do it and explained why we do what we do, says David Cooil. And that really sums it up because this is a farm where nothing happens by accident: it has all been thought through. David took over the farm in Ballabeg when his father retired and he soon realised that changes would have to be made. They had everything in place to start milking the cows in the spring of and by the end of this month they will be milking in all.
It spreads the milk across the year. This means that the cows go out for two or three hours in the morning straight after milking, then they are brought back in and given silage to eat before going back out after afternoon milking for another couple of hours and brought back in for the night around 9pm. If you saw the pictures of the awards being presented you will have noticed that it was David by himself receiving the award.
No mention of the cruelty? The rape to get the cow pregnant, ripping the baby calf from its mother so humans can drink the milk meant for it, the same cycle of rape and baby loss again and again for the cow’s entire life until it doesn’t produce as much milk any more and is shot? Female cows make milk to nourish their young. The bond between mother and young is the strongest in nature, she will fight to keep her baby and you can hear them bellowing for their babies for day afterwards.
And then she’ll go through it all again a few months later.
